Be The Change

“Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.”


Change is something that a great deal of people seek in life. Often to try and improve the world around them. Aiming to make the world more just and fair, to make it easier for people and themselves to inhabit and thrive in. People can often wish to have some form of impact on the world, and can enjoy the ability to influence the world around them, in order to leave their unique mark to be remembered by.

Often this can manifest as a desire to change the environment around them. Doing all they can to mold it to their vision. This however does not always work, as there is often the world can show resistance to those who try to change or influence it.

Their are risks to this approach. Those being that if that if you end up spending all of your energy and time on focusing on changing things outside of yourself, burnout can and will occur. Leaving you exhausted and beaten down. This can lead to growing resentment, hating whatever is not willing to change to your vision and in that resentment potentially acting out in a way that causes more harm than good.

Be the change you wish to see in the world.’

The way to avoid the risks listed above when it comes to trying to bring about change in the world, is to focus on being the change which you wish to see in the world.

After all, you are the most important thing to change and improve upon. Every interaction you have with someone has an impact on them, be it positive or negative. If you are happy, joyful and caring people will feel that warmth. They will remember the interaction with you and how it brightened their day and will then potentially work to do the same to others.

It is important not to obsess on the specks in the eyes of others, while forgetting the rather large branch in your own. However if you can embody the change which you want to see, you give a physical example to others. You will become a role model, a positive example for others who also wish to improve their lives, instead of a hypocrite who enjoys preaching while doing nothing about their own flaws.

In changing yourself, in focusing on maturing and becoming the best version of you that you could possibly be you may end up surprised by the impact that has on the world around you. Not only this, acting in this way will help you in forming an internal instead of external locus of control. That will bring about its own myriad of benefits to you as an individual, it will help make you less anxious and stressed for one.

So, if you have a burning desire to change the world, be that change. Embody that change in your mind, soul and body. In doing so, you will open up possibilities that you may have never dreamed of.
